The Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) is a valuable assessment tool for all golfers and non-golfers alike. Its purpose is to identify functional deficits in the body’s movement systems that may be the underlying cause of a client’s presenting complaint (e.g. pain). These dysfunctions are then addressed systematically with the aim of the client passing all seven of the top tier movement screens.
This is a unique, well structured assessment tool that is invaluable in identifying myofascial dysfunction, joint restriction and motor control deficits which underpin the majority of the musculoskeletal conditions seen in my clinical practice. The SFMA was developed in the USA by renowned physiotherapist Gray Cook and we at Golf Works are privileged to currently be the only practice that offers this powerful assessment tool in New Zealand. In conjunction with a regular physiotherapy assessment the SFMA has made it possible to problem solve some of the more complex musculoskeletal conditions in clients who have seen numerous physiotherapists and other allied health professionals in search of a solution.
